A trip to Kashmir will never fail you with surprises. We all have seen snow-capped peaks bordered by alpine forests and the pristine landscapes of Kashmir. However, there is yet another side of history that will definitely surprise you, which is Avantipura Ruins.
How to reach Avantipura Ruins from Srinagar?
The town of Awantipora or Avantipura is located on the banks of River Jehlum in Pulwama district of J&K. It is on Jammu and Kashmir National highway, so while traveling to Pahalgam you need to cover some extra km to visit this historic site.
The history of Avantipura Ruins
The temple was built by King Awantivarman in the year 853-855 CE. Previously known as Viswasara, the ancient town which was then a capital as well, was founded by King Avantivarman. He built many Hindu temples in this region, only some of which exist today due to vandalism by Islamic invaders. The temples of Kashmir do look very different from many ancient temples in Kashmir and elsewhere in India.
The temples have groups of figures of both sexes engaged in drinking and many other activities. The sculptures can be seen on the front wall of the entrance and the walls of stairs. Half a mile up is temple dedicated to Shiva.
Entrance Ticket
The entrance fee is 25Rs per person. Guides are also available if you need to know the history of the place.
Best time to visit
Summers are mild in Avantipur with the temperature averaging around 25°C. In Winters temperature can go below 0°C. Light cottons are the recommended clothing for the summers and heavy woolens for winter.
