Trekking in India offers you the opportunity of getting close to nature and to explore the geographical diversities. I spent 5 years in Maharashtra and did some of the best treks of my life.
In this blog post, I have compiled a list of top trek destinations I have been to, which are spread across the Himalayas to western ghats.
Western Ghats destinations
1.Prabalmachi
Level -Easy
Days required-1
Nearest station- Panvel, Navi Mumbai
Guided- yes
Prabalmachi is a small village hidden in the hills located very close to the Panvel city. It offers a pictures-some background of two mountain ranges of Sahyadris. Kalavantin Durg and mighty Prabalgad are two ranges standing tall overlooking the village.
Hike up to the village of Prabal machi is an easy level and passes through the green trails during the monsoon season.
Walking in the woods during monsoon is a beautiful experience. Climbing up to the village could be tiring but the view from the top will make all pain worth it.
2.Rajmachi
Level – Medium
Days required – 1, 2 if camping
Nearest station- Lonavala
Guided – No. Done self
Nestled above twin hills of Lonavala and Khandala in Maharashtra, Rajmachi fort is one of the popular treks in Sahyadri hills.
Its breathtaking natural beauty and stunning landscapes appeal to nature lovers. Rajmachi has its historic charm as well which will draw history lover’s attention for sure. It is one of the most fascinating historic structure which has witnessed the rule of several kingdoms.
[wds id=”16″]There are two hiking routes up to the Rajmachi fort. The easiest one runs via Lonavala. It is one day trek but can be extended to 2 days if you wish to camp. It is a well-marked trek with a 10 km long stretch, most of the trail is flat with lush green hills, valleys, and forests all around.
3. Devkund
Level – Easy
Days required – 1
Nearest station – Mangaon 30 km and Lonavala 82 km
Guided- yes
Devkund is a little waterfall hidden in the jungle. It is located near Bhira in Raigad district. The entire trek takes around 2.5 hours to 3 hours.
The forest around the jungle is beautifully green and dense with many species of animals and birds. The waterfall of Devkund is mostly unknown and unexplored in Maharashtra. The trek passes through some unexplored trails. Once you reach the waterfall, you will be overwhelmed with the beauty of this place.
[wds id=”20″]The water-pool under the waterfall has bluish-green water. Avoid swimming right under the waterfall. Due to a heavy amount of force many drowning incidents have been reported here.
Trekking in Himalayas
4.Triund
Level -Medium / Difficult during heavy snow
Days required – 2
Nearest station – Pathankot is the nearest station to Mcleodganj and is situated 90 km away
Guided – No(Pre-booked camps)
Triund is a small hill station in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It is in the foothill of the Dhauladhar range. Triund is 10 km from Mcleodganj.
Trekking for Triund starts from Galu which can be reached by taxi or bus from Mcleodganj. You can start from Galu temple or Mcleodganj itself depending on how much you want to walk. We preferred a taxi up to the temple of Galu to save our energy.
[wds id=”18″]The trail to Triund is steep but is well compensated with a walk among oak trees. There are also various songbirds in the forest making it a bird-watching paradise.
Triund offers a magnificent view of the Dhauladhar range which is the highest peak in the region of the Dharamshala region. On reaching the summit, one of the most beautiful and attractive ranges will be right in front of you.
5.Nag Tibba
Level – Medium
Days required – 2
Nearest station – Dehradun
Guided – yes
Nag Tibba(3,022 meters) is the highest peak in the lesser Himalayan region of Uttarakhand state and lend its name to the ‘Nag Tibba Range’.
Though Nag Tibba is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is late September-March. However, mid-november-march is also a good season for Nag Tibba trekking.
Distance from base village Pantwari to base camp is 5.5 km. Initial trek passed through goat village and then continues spur of the mountains.
[wds id=”19″]The rest of the trek passes through dense forest and meadows. There are some steep stretches during the trail. We were lucky to spot some big langoors in the forest. Make sure to stay with the group since you might get lost during the way uphill as the trail is not well marked. Night stay was in the camps.
6.Prashar Lake
Level -Medium / Difficult during heavy snow
Days required-2
Nearest station- Mandi, Himachal Pradesh
Guided- yes
Parashar lake lies 49 km north of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India, with a three-storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to the sage Prashar.
Lake has unpredictable weather from snow-laden mountains to bright sunshine-filled days. You can trek throughout the year. Weather at Parashar will be the same as Mandi. The highest Parashar temperature is 21C and lowest -8C.
It takes around 4 hours to reach base camp depending on your fitness level. 3 ft snow will definitely slow down your pace. It is highly advisable to wear gumboots during January and Feb due to heavy snow.
[wds id=”17″]Along the way, you will cross beautiful rivers and densely forested Himalayan hills. At some points, the trail opens up to some of the most beautiful meadows and you get to experience beautiful vistas of snow-covered peaks. After trekking for approx one hour, you are in mid of snow everywhere. Believe me, it’s no less than a winter wonderland
